Maybe your question should have desire rather than greed. A selfish desire to own is greed.
Anyway, there could be several reasons for having desire to own something. One of them is greed. But there are other reasons as well. For instance, you would want to own a puppy because you think that no one else can take better care of it. So you have a desire to own a puppy, which at the outset may look like greed, but in reality it is you love for the puppy that has made you greedy. Similarly there are several good and evil desires that make us "own" stuff.

It is simply human nature to be comfortable. When you see someone with something nice, you want to also have that or something nicer. Advertising agencies play on this so everything is better, newer, improved blah blah blah.
Monks of almost all religio1ns revert to owning only what is absolutely needed to live.
Sometimes I ponder, we in the western world with our money, government, internet, are we really happier then the natives we see in grass huts on National Geographic on the big screen plasma TV over satellite?
Or are those with simple lives, eat, sleep, hunt and love, maybe they know the real meaning to happy living.
