I agree with calala_red and the reasons I do is, large multi million dollar corporations like the Salvation Army and their like get too political and a lot of money is spent on administration costs and workers wages - mostly managers who attend many many meetings year in and year out wih no real outcomes - I mean no concrete ones. I have worked in welfare services for nearly 18 years and what I found was that it was the small community based services and church groups with workers many of them volunteers that realy got in their and assisted people in need. Many of these volunteers using their own resources (car, trailers, food items, money) to help individuals in need. I can recall many situations where houses had burnt down and families left in poverty with nothing and when I approached these well known charities I could get nothing for the families but church groups and community based services that were personality driven by caring individuals would soon find furniture and linkages into other services such as housing, health, legal services etc. There were no value judgements nor cynical coments but honest caring folk reaching out and helping their community.
Unfortunately in my oppinion the larger and more renown the organisation is the more political it can get and it can lose its original mission statement. I am sure that in its infancy these services set out with good purposes to help the needy, address poverty, racism, prejudice, environmental decay and all the other other social issues the world and its individual communities experience today but with money comes responsibility, power, politics, greed etc etc, and the original focus is lost.
Small services and their works are often unseen and unnoticed by politicians but the service and the committment they achieve for their community is paramount.

No organisation you can name. It's always the ones behind the scenes that work the hardest to change things. The big organisations are too busy spending millions on advertising and looking good, while the little ones do all the work. Example: One church I know of has a small aide service and they get in there and work while places like Red Cross spend millions. No I'm not saying this because I am biased. I am not a Christian. But the best organisation will never be known.

Great question! Maybe Rotary International. I'm not a member but I've heard good things about them. They also work for the local area. I have a couple of friends in the Rotary and they like it quite a bit.

What a great question!
I suppose that I would chose Medicins Sans Frontiers
They help people injured in environmental disasters and are non-political. Tough choice though.
My other choices would be Greenpeace and Amnesty international!
