1) link to another page (ex. MSN) without their permission from my free website.
2) embed public albums from Webshots and I submit my site to google.

linking to another's website is not illegal. Think about it, that would not allow google, yahoo or ask to operate now would it?

embeded graphics are another story. You need the owners permission. Some will be satisfied if you just list the ownership on your page next to the image.

Problem arises in 2 ways.
1. that photo is private property and the use of without the owners permission is illegal.
2. With an embeded graphic, everytime someone looks at your page that graphic is pulled down from the owners server, sucking up their bandwidth with no visit to their page.

Some owners have been getting aggressive about persuing embeded links, and yes it is very easy to trace... One guy found a company that had used one of his pics as an embeded link. He them made a prank picturer with the same file name and swapped the graphic files. Now the company website featured the new picture when viewed.. very very funny.
