I think it only has to stir up an emotion and awaken thoughts in order to be art.

You could say that there is beauty in anything that does that, but not necessarily beauty in its normal sense. when you find beauty in the grotesque, or beauty in ugliness, that is art.

It does not. people say there is an Art of death and distruction.
Also many works of art express unhappy or grotesque things. Many people use Art to make a statement about the way they feel about something like politics or gender inequality or consumerism etc it could be anything.

As is said often,

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....

What one sees as junk is another's treasure...

What you might think is just an ugly mess, someone outthere will call art. And if that someone is a reknowned art critic that ugly mess just became worth thousands, if not millions, of dollars.

Obviously not have you ever seen a painting by Picasso, or modern impressionist for that matter. Then there is Maple Thorpe who is a truly sick individual that some in society consider an artist.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder- and every mama warthog thinks her baby is just beautiful!!! So - yes and no- what is beautiful to one is not to another- it is cultural and individual-D
