We hear it so often now but, in reality, I guess everyone must have developed their own meaning for it. How can the words Political and Correct be reconciled? What would be a better phrase?

This was a term coined in Nazi Germany. It basically means that you are expected to hold views and voice statements in line with current government thinking and legislation. It does not allow for the moral rights or wrongs of a situation and it actually goes against true democracy.

(Because you ask "how can the words Politically and Correct be reconciled?" ..... you are making a statement, aren't you?)

The answer "walking on eggshells" fits well.

It is (being told) not to say the plain truth - when it hurts (in THEIR definition of hurt) someone.

If enough of us blondes complain that being called blonde hurts us.... we can get it made politically incorrect to call someone blonde.

You can't say disabled... because someone is hurt by it.
(Even though it's the plain fact. They are unable to do things that people generally are assumed to be capable of. They are, by the definition of the word: dis-abled. But gosh! Don't say so! The truth hurts! Say "differently abled" or "challenged."

Just be sensitive to individuals, and go by their wishes.

It's hard sometimes.
In the '70's hard-core womens lib days: refering to women as "chicks" or "girl" was TABOO. (In the business place I can see is. Girl is a pajorative, and a superior (male... there's the catch) could be in real trouble for calling a woman a girl. (It's also HOW he says it... which makes it even trickier.) Of course a superior woman could carry it off better ("girl.")

But my main point is: in New Jersey (among friends, not necessariky in the office) ' chicks ' is huge. And many women / girls are in fact flattered or otherwise prefer it / are fine with it. Older women love being called "girl" - it makes them feel young.

Just be aware of who you're speaking with and their sensitivities.

I agree to what you said , though your example wasn't exactly an accurate one , I mean, if everyone knows that "Bush is a liar" its not due to rumours, People lived through his lies & knew he was lying from the first word he quacked . You can't hide the sun with words , Bush's lying is an (Over) subject ... we all knew he was lying & SEEN it . One of his biggest lies is the war on Iraq , I won't post links neither will I say why was it a lie ... I'll let you do your own research on that subject but remember to be open-minded or else , you will be shocked of what you'll read , Good'ay Lad .

In my opinion politically correct is generally going over the top on some issues.

"To apease the masses" may be a better phrase because that is what it means to be "politically correct". You say things that you know the majority of the world will agree with.
