I saw that film too, although I think he said it the other way round.
But the answer to your question; a sound in the woods could be made by any number of things :-
- A crispy leaf landing on a pile of other crispy leaves.
- A squirrell cracking nuts.
- A Peacock calling or an owl hooting.
- A logger chopping wood etc. etc.
But if you are not listening or you are not in ear shot of the woods, or if you are not within close proximity of a tree falling, also if you are slightly hard of hearing, YOU CAN'T HERE A THING. Alternatively you could say "No sound can be heard".

Hey, just cos humans aren't there to hear the tree fall doesn't mean that the tree makes no noise, think about the poor little squirrels looking for their food and suddenly, without any warning, they are sqwished by a falling oak or something?? That is such an obvious question and yet every one asks it....
my question, why do people fail to see the obvious and instead look for really complicated answers???

Woods are full of sounds, if a tree fell for every sound made in woods, there would very soon be no trees standing.

I love these sort of questions. The word as we see it can only exist within waht you can see, hear, smell and touch.
How do you if something 100% exists if its not within the reality of your senses? Reality is what you see, hear touch and smell. Everything else only becomes reality when its within your field of senses.
Thats one way of looking at it and, Its as plausible as any other answer. So, does it make a sound? No, not if you cant hear it!

I don't know why all these people want to twist your question into some Zen koan.
Obviously they've never heard of the proposed use of infrasound as weaponry.
