absolutely, this is the correct way to manage a hedge and stop the mushroom effect ( open at the bottom and widening at the top )

If you have some bare patches at the base then cut into some live branches with a bil-hook or axe and bend them flat into the gap - they will re-grow....a bit like a DIY hedge laying.

I think the ends will thicken up, but not the middle. But who am I? I think I've read that....

I believe when prunning a bush, you need to cut in different spots, different lengths, like in a spiral starting at the bottom going up so it thickens everywhere. Possibly cut off the longer branches one year and the next do the same, so in say 3 years your bush will be 3 feet by 3 feet.

I get newsletters everyone once in awhile from this guy about trees and prunning. I forget the name of his web site, but I found it on the bottom left of iBtraveling.com. If you go there, you'll find something about plant tips, and then sign up for his email or even email him or surf through his site. It's a good one. Oh, and he doesn't spam you or sell your email address.

Good luck!

You need to make sure there are some buds, If you cut it down to bare sticks, it may not come back very well. However, if you trim a hedge regularly, it will thicken up
