I am an Australian, but i am pretty disgusted with Australia Day, how can people celebrate the massacring of Aboribigines and the taking of their land based on the principle of terra nullius. Because that is what it is about. It is celebrating the day, when Captain Cook landed on Australia dooming the Aborigines, even to this day, Aborigines do not have equal rights along with the rest of the "normal Australians". Even despite the massacring, unfair treatment and prejudice, there was still the arrival of disease, within weeks of European arrival, many Aborigines died from the diseases that the Europeans had brough over from Europe including chickenpox, smallpox, influenza and measles. Nothing was done for the Aborigines since 40 years ago (2007-1967), 1967 as in the 1967 referendum, the changing of section 51 and 127 of the Australian Constitution

i'm not trying to be racist, or ruin every Aussie's January 26th public holiday, i just think that was was done to the aborigines should not be something to be honoured or celebrated. and i think that we as Australians should do what is humane and give back to the aborigines what was rightfully theirs that is, the whole country.

What you have said is all true but could you not look at it differently as a day of healing, of remembering the past and its wrong doings and celebrating that in Australia you have the right to be critical of your government, you have a voice.
Alternatively, you do not have to participate in the formal celebrations but could possibly find a different way to contribute to the indigenous community such as signing petitions of protest or volunteering your skills to a youth programme. If you feel this strongly, you will find a way.

You don't like Australia day, then you are not a real Australian. If we hadn't come here the Aborigines would have continued to live like cave men and never evolved. I'm not saying the way we did it was right, but it's been done so build a bridge whinger. The fact that the Aborigines are apparently not given equal rights is bull and you know that! Aborigines have the same rights white Aussies have, and if they wanted to they could make a go of it. How often do you see an Aboriginal person job hunting? Not often. They sit back waiting for hand outs cause the government gives keeps on coughing up the bucks. Before you start jumping up and down and calling me racist I'm not, I believe in equal rights for everyone. The Aborigines just don't put in the effort required to build a life. Australia Day is to show PRIDE in our great and beautiful country, and how dare you say it's disgusting. Shame on you! I'm embarrassed for you and this question. Happy Australia Day for tomorrow for all those proud Australians out there. If ya don't like it, get the hell out!!! Oh and Michelle R, who the hell do you think you are calling my countries flag GANG COLOURS. Everyone should have pride in our flag and show it in every way possible. I love my country and it's flag and if it's gang colours than so be it! I'm proud to be a part of this gang! I LOVE AUSTRALIA!!!!! Get out if you don't!!!!!!

You sound like one of these people that has never even seen an aboriginal person, or know the communties and situations they live in. The Aboriginal people have access to everything, and more. THe same as any white person who is disadvantaged. Its people like you who widen the racial divide when you attempt to find differences. I would suggest you get your self out in the outback and see what exactly is lacking as far as aboriginal services, you will find nothing. I am proud to be part of a country that offers these services to our indigenous folks and attempts to look after them so well (wether they look after themselves is a different question) Aboriginal people have got there land back, in fact half of the NT is Aboriginal Land, Arnhem land being the first for them to get back in the 1930's so don't give me the aboriginal people have got nothing crap, you are so uneducated. THey get huge royalties for tourism and mining on their land. Besides if you want to pack up and leave this fine country go right ahead . I am sure if we all did that then you think no other country would take over?.

What happened then was bad right, but that is not now & when we Celebrate Australia Day we are just carrying on a tradition from way back then & they are supposed to join in because we all look upon them as aussies the same as us & also if people keep dwelling on some terrible thing in their life they will always be depressed so its time for them to realize it did happen but they have to accept it & to focus on the present & the future because I think its all this neggative talk that goes on is helping to pull them down & keep them unhappy
they have to start being proud of their race or nothing will change
they have to encourage the youth to move on from the past.
I know Oprah is Americian & was born Africian but if she just felt sorry for herself & thought about nothing but her hard childhood etc she wouldn't be this beautiful powerful woman
michelle r how shocking calling our flag that name

Its Horrible. But then, what should they do? Aborigines will, as they are suffering for theire subjected rigidity. Extructed facts of the referendum and the constitution will not help the unschooled Aborigines to fight for their rights, nor will the international comunity be moved, since they are "local" issues. There we go!

I can see your point "somewhat" but while your burning the Australian Flag tomorrow ill be celebrating the day because we are all Aussies now, not Aborigines and Convicts.

WHOAHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhh....
If you don't like Australia Day then you are NOT a real Australian .??
WHAT kind of crappola is that ...
I AM a real australian ... sixth Generation... and Australia Day itself means VERY LITTLE TO ME. While I don't agree entirely with the person who posted this ... I DO undertsand what they are saying ....
What took place on the 26th of January 1788 ??
the arrival of convict ships at Botany Bay... BIG DEAL..
While there is no shame in that event .. I really don't see the BIG DEAL of it.. if it wasn;t the Brits that settled Australia it could have been the French or the Dutch or a number of pthers ..
So why is it such a thing to be proud of OR rather to be accused of NOT being australian IF the day means nothing to you ....
(saying such crap in itself IS bloody well un-australian)...
If you want a day that means something really australian ( and Kiwian lol) GIVE ME ANZAC DAY. Not because it is glorifying war .. because it most certainly DOES NOT. ...
BUT because it shows the strength and importance of mateship in the most dire and horrible of circumstances .. AND THAT TO ME IS MORE AUSTRALIAN...
to be there for you mates when he/she needs you
to give your all to help others when it is needed.
to care
to give a damn
to triumph over tragedy ,,,
etc etc etc
THAT IS WHAT IT IS TO BE AUSTRALIAN.
