Once the egg is released you have 24 hours to fertilise it. They usually tell you to have intercourse 3 days before you ovulate and 3 days after. Sperm lasts for approx 3-5 days after ejaculation so you have a chance of conceiving even if you don't have intercourse on your most fertile day.

Ovulation Symptoms
Mittelschmerz
Mittelschmerz is one of the more common ovulation symptoms. It is the name given to a pain in the pelvic area that is associated with ovulation. The German word is derived from "mid-cycle pain". It is a sharp pain lasting usually minutes or hours, typically not treated with pain relievers.
Sometimes, doctors like to perform an ultrasound to rule out any other possible causes of pain. If you do not feel any sharp pain when ovulating, it is not a problem. If you do feel pain, the good news is that the prognosis of possible pregnancy is good.
Cervical Mucus
Cervical mucus is often evaluated during the monitoring of a basal temperature chart. It helps determine if the mucus environment is good for sperm survival and swimming. The mucus changes throughout the cycle. Sometimes it is described as dry, milky, egg white or sticky. Around the time of ovulation, it is clear and sometimes stretchy. This is often referred to as spinbarkeit.
Temperature Increase
As the result of ovulation, progesterone levels increase which help prepare the lining of the uterus, where a possible pregnancy will survive. Progesterone is a hormone that increases basal body temperature. Most women cannot detect the increase in temperature.

You have about 24 hrs after the egg is released. Any sperm released up to 5 days before ovulation could possibly do the deed. For regular 28-30 day cycles, days 10-16 are realistically when conception is most possible.

The most fertile period is the few days before ovulation. Ovulation is the process of an ovary releasing an egg from the follicle, permitting the egg to float down the fallopian tubes to be fertilized by any present sperm. Ovulation typically occurs about seven days after you end your last period. This timing varies depending on that woman’s individual cycle. Women can use the Fertility Awareness Method or Ovulation predictor kits, available in most drug stores, to help determine their exact ovulation timing.

That is dependent on how long your cycle is for example most woman and many web calculators will base it on a 28 day cycle so your egg day would be around 14 days since the first day of your last period its also good to do it around these days too.But for people like me who has a 35 day cycle mine comes on day 21 instead of 14.
This is just a way of helping you try.
But to get a better idea and pinpoint it with higher chance of success rate you should start charting your morning temprature you can learn how to bbt chart freom the net precisley.Or try and ovulation kit onthe day of discomfort that will tell you yes or no.

Straight away, the pain is the egg bursting out so any sperm released before hand will sit and wait for it in your fallopian tubes. The egg lives about 3 days so you will prob be fertile 3-5 days after you feel the egg released.

I thought it was half way through your cycle - so 14 days after the start of your last period.
