Just wondering if you could explain it to me. Maybe I'm just being completely dense, but why is everyone in hysterics at first, then he says that, and there's a real tumble weed moment and the only one laughing is his girlfriend's kid?

I know this is a trivial question, but it bugs the hell out of me every time I see the advert!

well if you look in his hand he has a remote, so i take he has a screen and a picture of them doing something that everyone else doesn't want to see.

You're not dense.. it's a comedy formula, a bit like Morecambe and Wise where they would start a joke... ' there were two old men sitting in deck chairs..........' and then their voices would fade out.
More usually, as in the BT ad, you'll just hear a punch line...' And the one legged jockey said, "No it's ok, I ride side saddle." '
