Because, like most women, they are unpredictable! But in my home country they started using male names due to gender issues.

Typhoons are not named after women. The fourteen nations (excluding Taiwan) that are affected by typhoons have each contributed names to a list of 141 names from which typhoon names are used sequentially. The names include animals, flowers, astrological signs and a few personal names both male and female.
Typhoons, hurricanes and tropical cyclones were named after women after the practice of naming them was revived after WWII. In 1974, the Australian Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, told the Australian Bureau of Meteorology that tropical cyclones were to alternate between male and female names. It was not a question of feminazis or PC gone mad, it was the opinion of a man with a sense of fair play.
Australia informed the World Meteorological Organisation of the order as new lists of tropical cyclone names had to be prepared for the three Australian TC warning centres. By 1979 under instructions from the WMO, the rest of the world followed the practice and hurricanes and tropical cyclones have had male and female names since then. With typhoons, when personal names are used, both male and female names are on the list.

Are they still? I'm surprised that they still give them only womens names. The tradition of giving hurricanes only womens names ceased about 20 years ago. Some PC correct people led around the nose by femnazis lobbied to include male names because the practice was sexist otherwise. The implication was that women were stormy, unpredictable and destructive.
If the practice of naming typhoons after women is still the case, it is because typhoons occur mainly in Asia. PC correct people and femnazis haven't gotten a death grip on men there yet.

Typhoons are rarely named after women. However last year there was typhoon Shanshan (Hong Kong) which is a pet name for young girls and Maria (USA). Other typhoon names which are also women's names are:
Wipha (Thailand)
Lingling (HK - another pet name)
Faxai (Laos)
Mitag (Micronesia)
Nida (Thailand)

I guess because women have a strong, persistent character. We get what we want, when we want it. And when we get angry, it's the end of the world for some.
