I have it and it has been a complete nightmare. I would stay far away from DirecTV. The DVR wouldn't let me rewind, pause during the NFC Championship and it froze three times during the game requiring a hard boot. They just had a "software upgrade" and things seem to be working well, but after the fiasco there is no way I am going to trust it for the Super Bowl. I'm switching.

Well, yes, you can record both HD and standard definition programming. The cost of the DIRECTV HD DVR is actually $299.99, however, after the $100 rebate, it comes to $199.99. Is it worth that price? That if something that you should decide, but I can tell you that it is very nice to playback HD content.
DISH Network is supposed to start offering the DishHD HD DVR for free soon, I believe in February.
I found a nice DIRECTV promotion at the following link:

Which model are you referring to? The current model has gotten some average ratings. I would recommend the HR10-250 model that has integrated Tivo. DirecTV does not sell this model anymore so you should look for it online. The current HD-DVR model does not have Tivo in it. Tivo makes a big difference and makes it very easy to use. I've had no problems with it and the HD channels come in crystal clear. I highly recommend the HR10-250
