It will be tough to survive, but you can do it. A lot of universities offer on-campus jobs for both national and international students, but you may not be permitted to work more than 20 hours total during the week. I would definitely suggest a university job before looking for one in the private sector because the university knows and understands that your studies are your top priority. Some universities may offer scholarships for international students to help defray your costs- check out the busar's office website or the financial aid office. Good luck! It can be done!

I recommend temping. It's more flexible than most stuff. You need to look for a staffing agency in the area you're going to. If it's not an urban area you may be out of luck. There are good jobs for people who speak multiple languages too.

Go to Monster.com and make up an American style resume. You don't have to pay for one, but if people offer to read over it, accept the offer and take their advice. It's supposed to be a 1 page document that almost instantly gets people to want to hire you. That's hard to write! You may need to have different versions to show off your different skill sets. If you're trying to get a job at a bank you need to show different skills than if you are trying to get a job as a salesperson. Beware of sales positions where you have to buy a product and sell it. You should NOT have to spend money to make money in the States, as a student.

It's possible to get a job and still go to school. You should also look into getting a student loan. Not a regular loan. Some companies will have programs to help you go to school while working for them. ASK.

Even for just one semester, the experience could be well worth it.
Good luck!

Hey,
It would help a great deal if you told us where you're from, originally.
But I can tell you that life in the US is very independant. You gotta do everything yourself from cooking to fixing nails in the walls. Nobody will interfere in your business. It can get lonely too. Yes you can get a part time job and go to school at the same time. It requires alot of hard work to survive in the US.
Again, it would help if I knew where you are from. But if you're an Indian, then you can go to www.desiexpats.com and I'm sure you will receive more specific answers.
Good luck!
