If you are saying this expression-
1. Between old friends acquaintances from the past--- you havent heard from each other for a long time.
2. Between an inferior to a superior- eg.-child to parent- The you are implying that your parent is ignorant about the big difference the matter being dealt with between his or her time and now (your time)
3. Between equals- among new or current friends-- there had been so many changes within the group- I cant keep up. so let me in on the new and current events.

MY understanding of the phrase "out of touch " is... that it means a person is no longer thinking along the lines that others are .. that their ideas and views are out-dated or even totally opposite to how the mainstream community sees things...It can also mean that a person has no idea of how another group thinks or lives because they are so far out of contact with those people.
to give an example .. I once read that GWB asked what he should say to a poor person because he had never met one...
GWB is therefore WELL out of touch with the lives of many ameican people.
so in summary .. it means holding out-dated veiws, Unpopular views or never having had an understanding of others
out of touch .. No concept no idea,
EDIT ...
Oh ... just reading the answers of others .. yes .. losing communication with somebody can mean you are out of touch,No longer seeing or speaking to somebody ..
I just had a different concept .. LOL wonder if that means I WAS OUT OF TOUCH ;)

What a wonderful question. Religion is, of course, the form that one's worship takes. Thus there are thousands of forms. Religion includes a system of religious beliefs and practices. The object of the religion may be false gods or the true God. Hence, there is false religion and there is true. Religion can get very fancy or remain simple. In the former case, such as it is today. In the latter case, such as it was in the Garden of Eden. What then is worship to me? How do I worship? To worship means to obey. And to obey means to worship. The two are intimately connected; indeed, they are coterminous and cannot be separated. Specifically, to obey the Sovereign Lord God Jehovah of Armies is to worship Him. I do my imperfect best in this regard. I fall on my face and get back up to try and try again. In the Garden of Eden, so long as they obeyed Jehovah, Adam and Eve were worshiping him. No temple, no Mosaic Law, no meetings. Simply leave the tree of the knowledge of good and bad alone. Simple. The minute they disobeyed, they stopped worshiping Jehovah. Same with the nation of Israel. The minute they attempted to practice a syncretistic religion they stopped worshiping Jehovah. The minute they made the golden calf, they stopped. And on and on. To worship is to obey. To obey is to worship. Hannah J Paul

You once knew someone like a brother/sister but you have not seen nor spoken to them in a long while --- thus do not know what they are up to.
