1. Besides neck length in giraffes, apply a Lamarckian explanation to another example of how structures in organisms change through time.
--------
Can anyone think of any other examples? My book doesn't have anything, I can't think of any, and I still can't find anything online. I would really appreciate it! Thank You! = )

Camels are the only mammals whose red blood corpuscles are nucleated and whose nasal mucosa reabsorbs all the water vapur breathed out.
In deserts camels do not get nutrients freely. For transport of oxygen Red blood cells have to divide faster than new ones needing nutrients can be formed.
Camels also have to travel long distances without water. So they reabsorb almost all the water vapour to stay hydrated.

Lamarck believed in inherited traits by adaptation. Thus the giraffe needed to have long neck and this was passed on the offspring. In Darwinian evolution those who had long neck could survive better in time of drought. An example of Lamarckian evolution would be the vestigial eyes of moles and of cave-dwelling animals which would be due to gradual reduction from disuse.

Think of some characteristic, *any* characteristic, that changes in the course of the lifetime of a creature. Lamarckian evolution would expect the offspring to have that trait.

E.g. a body-buider's children should all grow up to be muscle bound. It's because this doesn't happen that we know that Lamarckian explanation of evolution doesn't work.

The speed of rabbits. They run fast to get away with foxes and so their children would benefit from the effort to go faster. I think this is a good example because the neo-Darwinian (correct) explanation for the same event is even more logical.

Calluses of the ostrich: callus is acquired in lifetime and would have been (according to Lamarckists) inherited by their offspring.
