It is unreliable, at best. The format of the email is basically the same as phony emails telling you you've won some prize from someplace even though you never entered a contest.
So, lipstick may indeed contain lead, but this unsolicited email is probably not to be trusted.
Check the Wikipedia entry on lipstick... if there's ever a controversy about the subject, Wikipedia will probably let people know about it. Also, check the other site.
It's not impossible that some lipstick does, did, or will contain lead. After all, many things that we use on a daily basis probably cause cancer. But these things have not been proven, and in particular, this assertion about lipstick is unfounded.
Man, I never thought I would write so much about lipstick...
God bless.

I just did a search on lipstick containing lead and the first three entries at least had the e-mail you have just posted and information about how this is a hoax and how lead content in lipstick is closely monitered by the FDA to ensure that this would not happen. Don't panic. You have a hoax e-mail.

I work for estee lauder, we were told that we arnt supposed to mention it if asked but yes they do contain small amounts of lead. They arnt harmful enough to cause cancer or anything else among that nature. Dont freak out and think back woman have been wearing lipstick for a LONG time and no one really had cancer based from a make up.

Its not likely any major brand lipsticks contain a harm full amount of lead (Lead is a highly toxic substance). There are many ways in which humans are exposed to lead: through deteriorating paint(Until 1978, lead paint was commonly used on the interiors and exteriors of our homes), household dust, bare soil, air, drinking water, food, ceramics, home remedies, hair dyes and other cosmetics. Much of this lead is of microscopic size, invisible to the naked eye. Not much lead enters your body through your skin. For adults approximately 6% of lead that enters the stomach makes it into the blood stream. THERE IS NO CONCLUSIVE PROOF THAT LEAD CAUSES CANCER IN HUMANS.

Lead can cause neurological brain damage---"learning, language, and behavioral problems"--yahoo's article. I wear lipstick all the time so now I am afraid....I must do some more research on what is safe. You definitely don't want to be ingesting lead. It's toxic. And it builds up over time.

Only a very small range of lipsticks contain lead and even then only trace amounts. Lead doesn't cause cancer either, so you shouldn't worry.

This is false just a hoax. lead is toxic u wont find it in cosmetics, i work for a company run by the estee lauder group and believe me why would they risk a lucrative business empire to put lead in a product. first of all lead was used for lightening the skin centuries ago nd caused death do what benifit would the company gain by putting a toxic murderous chemical in a product.
