if it was a win 98 machine, you should be able to start in safe mode and delete the .pwl files on your computer. this may also work for win xp but haven't had to do it so can't vouch for the solution in that scenario...

Use a windows xp boot disk and reinstall windows xp. this will not delete anything but will install over the old version and get rid of the password. If the copy of xp is legal, meaning if you have a new copy of xp for your new computer and can give the other copy to the friend, then you can contact microsoft and they will help you resolve the problem. It has to be a boxed copy of xp and not one that is pre-installed or you have to go back to the place that sold you the computer to fix it and it will or should not cost more than 35 bucks to do this. Take care Heather

Don't worry about the password! If you are giving the computer to a friend, you should completely re-install Windows, formatting during the install process to clear your old personal stuff.
Of course, you must have the old installation CD and product key in order to do this.
Don't forget to run Windows update after install as many fixes etc have been done since that CD was purchased!
