My wife says that the sun will rise at the same time in Huntington Beach, CA as it would in New Your City. She says that New York City has the same amount of sunlight every day as Huntington Beach, CA. Is this correct? I woke up at 5:30 am in the morning in New York one day (June) and it seemed like it was bright enough to feel like 8am in Huntington Beach. As a matter of fact... I called the hotel front office to let them know how upset I was at the fact that they failed to wake me up at 6:30 am. They then informed me that I still had another hour to sleep. How was it possible that it was so bright at 5:30 am in New York AND what time will the sun'light' be visible in the morning in New York. Not the sun itself but the light from it. Is it brighter earlier in the morning at 5:30 in the morning in New York than it is in Huntington Beach, CA on the same day of the year? I believe that New York has at least one hour more of total sunlight every day from sunup to sundown. Is this correct?

Well, the sun goes in a spherical path from East to West, so technically you'd have the same amount of time. It may have just seemed that way. Probably psychological-some sort of placebo effect maybe?

The total amount of daylight throughout the year should be equal, although it might be slightly different on any given day. Sunrise in New York City occurs about (not exactly) 3 hours before sunrise in CA; this difference increases in summer and decreases in winter. Consult an almanac for specific times and an astronomer to explain why it occurs.

Another factor to consider: Since Huntington Beach is further south the incoming sunlight is more intense; so at a given time (say, 30 minutes) before sunrise it should be brighter outside in Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach will have more daylight in the winter and NYC will have more in the summer because of the tilt of the earth. Look up the amount of daylight for each city in January and June and you'll see that I'm correct.

I would imagine you are right. I think NY has more sunlight at certain times of the year because it's definitely alot closer to the north pole and I've noticed that the more north I go the more sunlight I see & I'm about 30 min outside of HB.

Huntington Beach should have more sun because it is further south, the days length will vary less as the year progresses.
