I have a 5-month old as well. According to her doctor (and the Gerber website), a baby demonstrates her readiness for solids by physical signals. If she is sitting with support, and when lying on her stomach she pushes herself up with straight arms, she is ready for vegetables and fruits. Start with vegetables, and give one single vegetable for 3 to 5 days before moving on to the next. Good luck!

NO!!!! It is recommended by doctors as well as by Gerber that you introduce foods in steps and carefully because of food allergies.... if your doc has not provided you with a step by step sheet you can print one from Gerber. All three cereals, rice, oatmeal and barley have to be introduced first, one-by-one. You say you have mastered rice so then introduce say...oatmeal. The first day you give the baby one tablespoon of the oatmeal (dry cereal, mix with water) day two 2 tbsp. day three 3 and on day four 4 tbsp. 4 being the maximum. If no reaction occurs through any of that and after three days then you introduce the next cereal the same. Veggies are to follow in a similar manner, 1/4 jar, 1/4 jar, 1/2 jar and then full..wait three days and introduce a new one. Then the same goes for fruit! I haven't viewed the sheet at Gerber but i imagine it is the same my ped. gave me a few months back when my son started foods. I highly recommend it, it gave me as a first time parent a better security about what I was doing as well as provided him with a safe and healthy diet! Good Luck!

Gerber 1 foods are great to start a child on at 5 months... I'd start with the greens first, then oranges. Try mixing a little bit of peas or green beans with her rice cereal and see how she likes the taste. Then you can start feeding her just the baby food. Just make sure to space changing foods by at least 5 days, to rule out allergies. Good luck

That's very impressive, but you should not feed her mashed vegetables yet. Maybe you could add a bit of the mashed vegetables into her cereal.

I just started giving my baby EVERYTHING he could swallow about that time: ALL kinds of baby food, pudding, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, bananas, even the really soft stuff from canned tuna, ALL the soups, and everything else I can think of. Now he is 12 months old and to give you an example of how good he is about eating different things, his favorite food ever is my mom's broccoli and cheddar soup with the big chunks of broccoli, and the other night, he ate a full dinner of what I was having which was cooked zuccini, carrots, broccoli, onions, sweet potatoes, and the breaded tempura shrimp all with tempura sauce (I don't tempura fry the veggies, just the shrimp but that's beside the point). I think his favorite was the zuccini. Is that wild or what? He's so cute it kills me.

I started feeding my little one fruits and vegetables at around 3 months. The doctors told me if she could handle it, then there would be no harm. She didn't really like cereal all that much. Then I got the bright Idea of giving her cream of wheat, which she loves. That was around 6 months. A lot of children can have allergies to wheat, and gluten, but if they did ok on the baby oatmeal, then they should do fine on the cream of wheat. It's best to trust your judgment, because you know what's best, and you see how they react to different foods. Trust yourself!

Hi, I would start slowly, introducing one new food at a time, to se if there are any reactions. Some babies will get loose stools and tummy upsets or a skin rash if sensitive to some foods. If there is a real allergy reaction, you want to know what caused it.
Start with something simple, like adding puree apple to the rice cereal. It's often more economical to use pre pared baby foods at this time. If you wait about 3-4 days between changes ,it will igve enough time to see if it agres with her or not. some of the more notorious foods for sensitivity or tummy upsets are pears, eggs and straight cows milk.

i would mix a little of something into her cereal. one new food at a time spaced 3-4 days apart to weed out any allergies. avoid meat until after 6 months.

yes, she could have that at 4 mo, just start feeding her baby food, try feeding her one kind ex. sweet potatoes for a week so she gets use to it and then try a dif kind for a week, or mix it with the cereal.

Did you get permission from your doctor first? You're a bit early for the introduction of solids and you really don't want to trigger any allergic reactions.
