I need help finding GOOD monologues. My professor seems pretty interested in keeping roles designated with race... which has ended up with her suggesting that I take something thats either an old slave sounding monologue, or stuff that's just stereotypical and possibly trash...

What have u all found helpful?

If you are looking for something funny, you might want to check out the play The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. There is a monologue in there of Saint Monica (I'm not sure if that is the actual character, it's been a while since I read the play, but anyways, it is the saint that nags and tries to get judas to have a fair trial). You'll probably have to cut it down a little bit, but it is really fantastic, and shows a range of emotions.

Roles designated with race? That's odd...
If you can find a script, do a monologue from Aida. There are some good ones in there, although it's a musical.
That's all I can think of. Good luck!

Ok based on your picture I assume you are black. So PLEASE tell me you have looked into plays by August Wilson (Fences is great), Ntozake Shange (For Colored Girls...) & Lorraine Hansberry (A Raisin in the Sun) these are well-known black playwrights and you should know their work. August Wilson won a Pultizer Prize for Fences. I cannot believe that August Wilson was not suggested to you!! I am also shocked that you are being limited to monologues that are racially specific and you are in a collegiate setting, what is that about?
