Would you recommend Microsoft Visual Studio Express?

I am taking my first semester of computer programming and the teacher suggests that we get Microsoft Visual C++ vers. 6 or 7. is the free version that microsoft offers similar or better that those versions and would you recommend it?

It will be really better, you can download Platform SDK with it and you will get every thing that you need.

It will do for the first semester nicely.
You can't program professionally in it, but you don't care.
