They recently uncovered the largest circus - which is what they called their chariot racing arenas - outside of Rome in my home town of Colchester in Essex.

Unfortunately most of it is being built over with housing but the contractors and planners were good enough to rearrange some of it so that the green areas are over some of the significant parts. They have covered it all over again now as leaving it exposed would destroy it after long-term exposure to the elements. Time Team did a programme on it so you should be able to find some interesting things on their website.

The most interesting thing about this is that right up till the redevelopment the site was still being used for stabling horses as it was part of the MoD barracks area!

Also of interest, but probably not much use for your daughter's project, is that the opening credits of Blackadder goes Forth were filmed only a couple of hundred meters away from the site.

Colchester is full of Roman history and the story of Boudica and the mysterious disappearance of the fabled Roman Ninth Legion happened in this area. The Norman keep, which is now a museum, still standing in the Castle Park is built on the site of the Roman temple to Claudius which Boudica burnt down after the Romans killed her husband and, er...did unpleasant things to her and her daughters. You can go down into the cellars and see the foundations of the temple which they built the castle on.

Many of the Saxon Shore forts (built to defend the east coast of Britannia in the 3rd Century from barbarian pirates) e.g. Richborough and Portchester Castle are still pretty much complete.

There was also a recent educational series about the Romans in Wales aimed at yr daughters age group. I think it was on Channel 4. You might be able to view it over the web.

I don't know what this says about me, but I found the Roman latrines in Housesteads fort on Hadrian's Wall fascinating - so clever and hygienic! I think most 8 year olds would like them too. A Google Search will come up with more info.

Come on, father, this project was designed to help your daughter learn how to find things out for herself. Show her how to search the internet and to intelligently validate the websites she finds. It is not a library but a dump where all kinds of people put all kinds of stuff, some true, some spoofs and some utterly wrong. Your daughter will learn a lot more by checking the answers you get to your question than just copying them. She is of the age when she can learn to do things independently and deserves to learn how to do this project because other kids in her class will.

caesar never died in the place they all say he did (senate house)

that was bing rebuilt at the time & I think they were using Pompey's house as a temp base.

shakespear's play used the senate house & the myth has been part of teaching ever since
