I suggest a 4-pronged approach.
1. Save money wherever possible. Have the maximum savings deducted from your paycheck.
2. Invest -- mutual funds, bonds, do your research, go middle of the road
3. Train -- go to school, take courses, do whatever you can to improve your marketable skills.
4. Maximize your earnings. Look for a better job (or a job if you don't have one yet) If you don't have the education or experience reaquired for a job that you really want -- do what you can to get that experience and education -- while you're earning
