Alot of times people need "White noise" to help drift off to sleep.
Sometimes if you're not used to complete silence, your mind wanders through all the problems or events of the day and every strange sound keeps your mind wondering what it is. With the tv or radio on they can simply ignore those sounds they're used to.
I use the sleep timer on my set frequently to give me an hours headstart and am usually asleep in 2 min.!

I am one of those people that must fall asleep with either the TV or the radio on. There's a few reasons why I do it. One of them is that I have a very old house that creaks alot during the night, especially in months where the temperatures are at their extremes. If I go to bed in silence, then I'm constantly waking up from the loud creaks. With the TV or the radio on as background noise, it sort of evens out the sounds in the house and allows me to get longer periods of uninterrupted sleep. Also, I just really don't like silence. I've had night terrors and sleep paralysis my entire life so sometimes going to sleep isn't a peaceful experience for me like it is for other people. I suffer from the kind of insomnia that prevents me from falling asleep. When I lie alone in the dark, my mind starts working overtime and prevents me from falling asleep. If I lay down while watching a movie, I am able to drift off to sleep more easily. That's my reasoning behind it ... I guess its different for everyone.

It's a habit and the downfalls of it are that it wastes electricity and if you have to do it and your partner doesn't like it it could be a major source of consternation between couples. Personally I had to insist that we not have a TV in the bedroom because it was a pet peeve of mine to wake up in the middle of the night with the TV still on. My kids used the sleep set on their remote and would set it for a half hour and that would get them to sleep. Everyone has different methods of making their sleep experience pleasant and whatever their method is it probably should be compatible with their significant others because sleeping is an important component in our overall health.

I sleep with the TV on and it has nothing to be addicted to TV. I like the constant soothing noise as I work nights and sleeping in the day is almost impossible, with dogs barking, trains and garbage trucks and everyday noise. It gives me a steady stream of low noise.
Ulagam is just being ignorant.

My husband does this. In talking with his mother about it one day, I found out that she used to put him by the TV when he was an infant, so that he wouldn't be disturbed by any noise (he had 2 older brothers). I realized that that is probably why he HAS TO have it on to go to sleep. He says his mind wanders and thinks too much if he doesn't and he can't fall asleep. We go to bed at different times, so he can fall asleep with it on. OR I wear earplugs so I can fall asleep.
It is very irritating! But we have worked it out over our 13 year marriage.

It's a habit. They'd be better off with a fan or something like that on. You do NOT get good restful sleep with a TV or radio on. It is scientifically proven. It keeps your brain cells hoppin', even if you're asleep.

it's because of the noise. some people need background noise so they won't just concentrate on their own thoughts. it's like how some people need to study with music. if they don't they get distracted and can't study. same difference in this scenario. if a person is just lying there in complete silence they can't just rest. their mind will wonder and stay active.

i used to do that.
it took the edge off of waking up alone.
i would keep it on when leaving for work in the morning too so that when i opened the door, the house didn't seem so ominously empty.
it is strange though because i have always enjoyed being alone. guess thats the diff between being alone and being lonely.
