A family doctor (general practitioner) starting out might make about $75,000-100,000. 'Common' specialists such as cardiologists make about $200,000. Surgeons can easily gross about $250-300,000 per year. Bear in mind, however, that they often have huge debt and major expenses - especially insurance - so their effective income may be significantly less. (Example: I spoke with a head cardiologist in about 1990 who was making $200,000 per year, of which about $60,000 went to taxes and $75,000 to insurance.)
