Having visited several third-world countries and cleaned up from their doctors, I do not believe that Americans would be happy with socialized healthcare. Further, as someone who works very hard for my paycheck, I hate the idea of spending it on someone who will not work for themselves. And, as a healthcare worker, I hate the times I spend my effort on a patient knowing that I will pay for it through my taxes as well.

These people that want socialized health care are not thinking rationally, they are thinking with their hearts not their minds. If you look at socialized health care across this planet you will see why we have the BEST health care in the world. The rich people from these other countries always fly here for their health care. They do not want to trust their health to a government employee.

If we succumb to our "feelings" our health care will suffer. Just look at how the person (a few answers up) is treated just because she is on government assistance. Do we all really want to be treated like this. Just remember the last time you went into the DMV. Is this REALLY what we want?

I am so saddened to know that when I was on Medicaid, I was looked down upon and resented by my nurses and doctors. I thought people went into healthcare because they had a heart that really cared about people's health (not their bank account or lack thereof). Now I see why I felt I wansn't getting the most appropriate care for my pregnancy.

I feel I am for socialized healthcare. I am one who does not have insurance. I'm an unmarried full-time mother. I also work part-time. My work does not provide insurance for me. One illness could have me so far in debt that I would never see the end of it as long as I lived. What if I got cancer? I have to ask myself this every day.

I know I am not the only person in this situation either. How about companies like WalMart and their employees who work 39.5 hours a week and have no health insurance? The largest retailer in the country gets out of giving health benefits to its employees as much as it can. Come on. Someone needs to step up and stand up for the working poor and the jobless and homeless.

How about people who work for small companies? A friend of mine has been washing dishes at the same restaurant for 50 plus hours a week for 20 years. He has no health insurance. He works hard for a living. He is still poor. He also works very hard for his paycheck and pays taxes just like you do.

Not everyone has the advantages of an education and a good-paying job that provides insurance. I really don't believe that being able to afford health care should be only for the "haves."

It's not as simple as "go get a good job so I don't have to support you with my taxes." There are simply not enough of those types of jobs for the population. I had a full time job in a factory up until about 5 years ago. I had decent pay and insurance. Well, that company moved all production to China. That's happening at a sickening pace all over the country.

I think you have a misconception about exactly who does not have insurance. It must be the lazy, no-good, people who just want to take, take, take. It is just not so.

(edit) A little more information on why I am pro-socialized healthcare. Twice now, I've been offered full-time jobs which would have had insurance benefits. All I had to do was pass the physical. Well, I didn't. I have a herniated disc. So, in essence, what they are doing is denying me access to health insurance for the sole reason that I might use it. Interestingly enough, one of the companies that offered me a full-time position is the place where I am currently working as a part-time temp. So, you can't tell me they are in any way concerned about my health or welfare--they let me work there, but won't hire me as permanant so I can have insurance. I feel this is some sort of discrimination.

I agree with you. I know people who complain that they do not have healthcare insurance and can not afford it, yet they drive SUV's, have cell phones for the entire family, wear designer clothing and go on expensive vacations every year. And yes, there are a lot of wellfare recipients who are abusing the system as well. I have a real problem paying higher taxes to support people like this. Why should I have to compromise my already modest lifestyle because people won't try to help themselves? Socialized medicine will only make people more dependent. And where there is dependency, there is no prosperity.

Healthcare costs are high because there is a lot of fraud out there. What we need is Medical Liability Reform. Medical liability reform would decrease healthcare costs, freeing up more money to make insurance more affordable. It would also increase access to healthcare, as fewer doctors would be forced out of the profession or away from high-risk specialties because of overwhelming malpractice insurance premiums. We also need to investigate welfare fraud which is costing us billions of dollars as well.

I think socialized healthcare could very well be the answer for the US because we don't have to implement it in the same manner it has been implemented in other nations. I feel like this idea is all to often written off because people aren't willing to acknowledge the fact that we would have the opportunity to design such a system to fit our nation.

A second pertinent issue is how you view those who would be "getting a free ride". I personally feel that nobody wants to be poor and a free rider - some people go through difficult times and need a boost from society. I'm happy to know that my tax dollars would be assisting people who are worse off than myself, because I sincerely doubt that they want to be that way.

Of course, Americans will not be happy with socialized healthcare system. We already have the best healthcare system money can buy, and we will get an even better (less socialized) healthcare system in the future. We want incentives to get rich. We want incentives to get healthy. We got what we want, and will continue to want more and get more. That's what makes Americans happy.

All people deserve to have healthcare -which apparently every other first world nation has understood.
Why are we the richest nation on the planet and 1 in 8 has no access to healthcare?
So you have a resentment. Big deal.
What happens if you lost your job and insurance, would you be so arrogant then?
