I have two red eared silders and it always seems like they're underwater for really really long periods of time. I've checked quite a few other sites but can not find an answer.

In controlled tests, turtles have lived in nitrogen environments for 33 HOURS, while most animals cannot live more than 30 minutes in one.

In practice, turtles can stay underwater for different amounts of time depending on their species, size, and what they are doing. A turtle can hibernate underwater for months. It can sleep under there for about an hour, give or take 15 minutes.

Try discovery.com I think that is the site for the discovery channel they did a show recently on turtles. I found out something else that I did not know; it seems that a turtle can breath through its rectum also. I think thay may be loosing it.

It depends on the type of turtle and how big it is. We've got an alligator snapping turtle that I've NEVER seen come up for air. When they need to breathe they'll come up. Don't worry.
