To set up a sea route you need to have boats that can travel open water, you need to have discovered the civilization advancement trade and you need to build a harbor in two seaport cities.

If you contact another civilization that has the same qualifications then you can negotiate with them and set up a sea route with them. This is the only way you can trade with someone who lives on another continent, unless you have a city on that same continent with a road that connects to the other civilizations capitol. This probably means that to trade with another nation through their seaports they must have a seaport with a road leading to the capitol.

If you want to get your gold up then you need to cut down on your expenses. Hit the F2 button and visit your advisors (F3-F6). Your civilization manager tells you the state of your economy. The slider bars set how much money you are paying for entertainment and scientific research. If you reduce those slider bars (move them to the left) then your expenses will also be cut (as will your research and/or your payments to keep the citizens entertained and happy. Usually, I need to reduce my scientific research and increase my entertainment expenses.

If you press the F3 button you get to meet your Trade advisor. She monitors the trade routes and what kind of imports and exports you have. When you build a road to a resource or luxury and when you establish a trade route then it will all appear here. She also keeps track of which cities and civilizations you have trade routes with.
