well, i know NOTHING about bass amps. so i was wondering if someone could help me out with some information on heads and cabs.

I would highly recommend a Trace Elliot or Ampeg head. You can pull a wide variety of sounds from it.

As for a versatile cabinet you cannot go wrong with a Hartke 4x10 and throw in a nice 18 for your super low frequencies - although you can pull some amazing sounds from 2 4x10 Hartkes. Ampeg also make very versatile cabs as well.
