Not like I'm thinking of doing it or anything, but in films you get this idea that you can finish someone off in seconds by putting a pillow over their face. Are we really sleeping every night with such a dangerous weapon under our heads?

Of course it isn't as easy as Hollywood depicts. You need to hold that pillow over the person's face for at least two minutes, with them fighting you all the time (unless they are unable to). The assumption is made that once the deed has been started the murderer will continue it until the point of death is reached. Since a movie has to be under 3 hours and since most televisions drama shows have to be under 45 minutes it is a common plan to telescope time making a quick event out of a one that takes longer. Another example of this is when a person starts to choke another or puts them into a chokehold. Usually the person seems to drop in only a few seconds. Actually it takes at least two minutes, and in all the cases mentioned above the pillow smothering or chocking has to continue for a few minutes after the person falls unconscious to insure death. The human brain can survive for up to 3-5 minutes without oxygen.

When a person drowns they don't die from the lack of oxygen until AFTER the breathing reflex forces open their mouth and forces them to breathe in a lung full of oxygen; then once the lungs are saturated with water the person can no longer take in oxygen, and they start to lose consciousness and die. But, it takes a little time so a person's live can be saved with rescue breathing even after they loss consciousness.

Oh, I'm going to bust another Hollywood myth. Deliberators can shock a person back to life, but when accident patients are reached only about 10% of the time can the medics or doctors get the person's heart breathing again. And even if they do if the brain has been deprived of oxygen for more than 5 minutes there will be brain damage. If the reflexes are damaged, and they often are, then the person's heart can't be kept working on its own. We can use a respirator to force the body to keep living, but usually it is too late for the brain so the chances of a meaningful recovery are small.

The pillow alone is not dangerous. For the pillow to be dangerous, you need a gun and somebody having enough guts to perform the act on you. Then, the pillow will be a dangerous weapon to sleep around.

On second thought, would you sleep on something else or sleep without a pillow, just because you feel that it's a dangerous weapon to have around? What's the possibility of someone killing you in such a way? =)

How many official Police Homicide reports are there with the murder weapon being a pillow ? I've never heard of a news report where the murder weapon was a pillow.

It really just takes some upper body strength... or the position to sit on the pillow... my favorite way to free someone is to hang them on a meat hook, while they are still breathing and with my stainless steel machete slit them open from head to toe and let their insides dry out, then when they are nice in dry , I skin them and wear it like a wet suit.

"Are we really sleeping every night with such a dangerous weapon under our heads?"

That made me laugh!

An old neighbor/friend of mine used to tell me "I never do anything wrong...my wife warned me years ago...'eventually you will have to fall asleep..' and that was scary for him. :)

I don't think it would be as easy as it looks...I believe people put up one hell of a struggle to breathe.

Yes, you can if you are strong enough to hold it for more than 5 minutes.....and yes, we do sleep with a dangerous weapon right under our heads. Thankfully though, not many people can/will use it.

No, you actually have to put your hand over the area of the pillow where their mouth is, otherwise they can just keep breathing as long as they didn't panic.

It may take a minute, more or less to suffocate someone with a pillow, assuming they don't manage to pull the thing away.

Yes, but it takes a lot of practice. I am an expert. A tip: satin and silk pillowcovers are slippery so make sure you have a good grip.
