Quite a broad question! Well, let's see, the best for me is the service industry. You won't get better service anywhere else in the world.
I'd say the worst thing is how problems in Japan tend to get ignored or swept under the rug instead of being solved, because it can be embarrassing for all involved if something bad is brought out into the open.

The best thing about Japan would be drinking in some hole in the wall bar all night long and just shooting the breeze with some good folks. The worst thing about Japan would be trying to take a shower in an apartment where you can see your breath.

I agree with Big D that the service you receive in Japan is Excellent! I mean to get bowed to by the gas station attendants amazes me every time it happens. And every time you walk into almost any store or business you are welcomed with a greeting. You certaintly don't see that in the states!
I think the worst is that Japan is still a very closed off country in allowing foreigners to easily live here. Even if you have lived here since the age of 2, if you are not pure Japanese (born and raised) you will always be considered a foreigner.

All the kind people are the best thing about Japan and all the others are the worst thing.
I love the general feeling of safety and the fact that things work noticeably the transport system. I hate the bureaucracy at city hall , renewing drivers licence etc

oh, I can't tell you how long I longed to here what you just wrote... well, not 'just' wrote, but you wrote. I am an Aussie dad who is living in Japan with his half Aus/Jap daughter of just two. I pray in so often that she ends up with your kind of thinking and pray even stronger that she never consider a Japanese man for herself. .. not that any such thought rattles easily within, I could not imagine a life for my little girl that included the loveless, touch-less and emotionless connection they believe comes with two futons placed side by side for forty years... I congratulate you on speaking your mind.

Just one of each?
That's a bit hard.....so many good and bad things.
Good - Service, the four seasons, just the over-all quality of products, clean cities, the fact that you don't have to worry about getting mugged when walking alone at night, the food.
Bad - Old fashioned older men in business, the formalities that you have to go through so as not to be thought of as rude, wearing a suit during the summer (in Tokyo!!), the unopenness to new culture and ideas, and the fact that EVERYONE goes to lunch together!! (I wanna eat my lunch alone please thank you.)

I love Japan!!!I think commonly are the FOOD, their high technologies products and equipment, their own DISCIPLINE.
I just dislike them for having racial discrimination, yet they respect every nationalities staying there, still they don't give a big chance to other nationalities especially Filipino to work there and show to them it's capabilities and talents.
