I am a bill collector, and sometimes I feel absolutely horrible for calling people and completely making them feel like crap (unintentionally). I respect all of the laws and am very professional at what I do, but I sometimes feel like a bad person, like I shouldn't be doing such a thing.

As long as you are respectable then no you are not a bad person. Just always remember not all people are dead beats some have fallen on hard times and honestly can not pay the bills... Your job is a very tough job. No matter what you do on the phone or how nice you are you are going to get rough treatment and be disrespected because of your job alone. There are so many bad bill collectors our there that they give them all a bad name.

Sorry, but yes, what you are doing is ethically and morally substandard. Most collection agencies don't really respect all the laws, and even if they did, the laws in this area do not protect consumers well enough. And the industry definitely attracts a lot of very hostile collectors with serious anger management issues who use their jobs to vent on the debtors. Unfortunately, you can't be part of a corrupt and unethical system without being tarnished by it. Find a new job so you can sleep with a clear conscience at night. There is a good reason why yours is bothering you now.

It doesn't make you a bad person. Some people truly hit hard times and it's tough but they still have to pay their bills. If you're truly uncomfortable and unhappy with the work, pound the pavement for options. You shouldn't have to do a job you hate.

Your job is not who you are but what you do. Doing your job well does not make you a bad person in any way. If that were the case you would have lots of company..IE: jailers, dog catchers and used car salespeople. Anyone can find fault in almost any job if they try to.
I was always taught that everyone has a job to do and you should do it well, no matter if its being a doctor or a ditch digger.

I guess someone has to do it :)
I wouldn't like the job, and would probably be constantly looking for another one. I'd also hate being the one that has to repossess cars and homes--they must really feel like crap--or not.

I knew people who did this, and it was good for them as it could be done from their home. Not that good, though--like when people just can't or won't pay.

It a job. Not your fault people not pay their bills. My Nephew did this for a while. He would make deals with the people and said most times they would pay. Many were just in a tight spot and he could work with them. Actually a lot were happy to be able to work something out.

No you should not feel bad, they are the ones not paying their bills! people are stupid most companies will accept min payments. Or here even if you send in $1.00 it shows that you are making some sort of effort, it will just add to the interest and late charges , but you are doing something. not just ducking .

No it dosen't make you a horrible person. But I have worked doing telephone surveys off and on quite a bit so I have lots of sympathy for the devil.
