What's there to focus on? it is "space" after all. If you look close enough you'll see the more distant stars in that space.

yes, I always focus at the space between stars. i try to imagine the distance between them and the very distant objects that EXIST in the space that only "looks" empty.

oh yeah
have you ever been to place like west texas or any open country?
its amazing...
stars everywhere..
and you know how like the milky way is a spiral shape?
well you can one of the legs or whatever.. its really coold although it just looks like a big cloud line in space haha..
but it looks better when you actually see it..
i love loking at the stars and just.. imagining

if you live far away from big cities you will notice there isn't much space between the stars.

if you're talking about things that don't "shine" or produce their own illumination, like dark matter, yes we do all the time, we view particles, asteroids, etc., we use radio telescopes to search through the darkness and the unseeable through our eyes and optical telescopes
