Tom Landry
1960 -1988

For a while, a long while, Tom Landry was the only coach the Cowboys ever had. He was there from the beginning. He built the Cowboys into a power. He finished his remarkable career with a 270-178-6 record. But that doesn't come close to telling the whole story. He led the Cowboys to 2 Super Bowl Championships and 5 NFC Championships. The Cowboys played in 14 NFC or NFL Title Games. He won their division 12 times. Most impressive is his unparalleled string of 20 consecutive winning seasons, placing the Cowboys in the playoffs in 18 of those years. Yet in the midst of this incredible career, Tom Landry only won the Coach of the Year once, in 1966.

Things didn't begin well Landry with poor showing by the Cowboys. However, the owner of the Cowboys, Clint Murchinson, Jr. surprised everyone on February 5, 1964 by signing Tom Landry to a 10-year contract extension. This is possibly the longest such contract in the history of pro football. What a bargain!! Landry's reputation was on defense, but his innovations on offense led to the initial success as coach. The Cowboy offenses were always high-powered and could score at any time. His innovations were not limited to the offense and the invention of the flex defense and the prevent defense helped mold the "Doomsday Defense" the Cowboys were noted for the 1970s.

Tom Landry was born on September 11, 1924 in Mission, Texas. He was a defensive back and punter for the Yankees in the AAFC and the New York Giants between 1949 and 1955. The Dallas Cowboys was his first, and only, head coaching job.
