To update my answer I agree with Blog Cartoonist...

Holding Back The Years by Simply Red was a fave of mine in the 80's...This is a song that showcases the voice well and lends itself to interpretation very well...

Sara Smile by Hall & Oates was a good song from the late 70's, I think...

Somebody To Love by Queen was written to recall the gospel/soul sound which it does very well and if sung well, this song can bring the house down...

Invisible by Alison Moyet is a classic of the 80's and is very soulful while still being a bit uptempo...

And the Marvin Gaye song is awesome, think Debarge, Levert all those artists

Casanova by Levert was a fun song back in the day...

In the 90's the Neville Brothers, I think, did a remake of 70's fave Steve Miller Band's Fly Like An Eagle which was pretty good...

Depending on your voice range and power i would say, "Wish youd never leave in Summer" by stevie wonder if u have a good range and lots of power. "Betcha my golly, wow" by the Stylistcs if ur into something simple, and "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" if you really suck.
