No, they were not oppressed by the Ottoman Empire, and were perfectly fine for centuries, though they weren't exactly free either. People forget how close we came to tyranny in the day's of our countries birth. We too were aided by foreign powers, had France minded it's own business we would be some weak British puppet today, like Canada. No offense to the Canadians.

Europe did not have a true Democracy, if you don't count the Greek City states, or the Italian ones, until about the 16th century. Depending on your definition. Now wouldn't it be foolish then to say that all the Europeans could understand or tolerate were brutal, oppresive, monarchies?

Absolutely. Iraq isn't a unified country. It's a group of people fighting for control. They are fundamentally opposed to one another. The only way to maintain a country in this state is brutal dictatorship.

The Muslim religion tells people what to wear. How to pray! how many times a day to pray. Which way to face at prayer time. Even dictating a once in a life time journey to Mecca, Etc. It's a religion where almost every part of daily life is dictated to the individual. How can anyone have a lifestyle (because this religion is a lifestyle) where so much is dictated then be free to choose who is going to run their country!! They need to be told what to do!!

Best question today! Surely it must be obvious that a culturally disparate country of the 19th century, can only be controlled by a strongman as Saddam was. And I am also positive that our Government know that. What is happening right now is jokeying around to see if it is going to be their strongman - Al Sadr- or our strongman. We simply haven't found one yet.
