We are, as human beings, designed to identify with the hormones of our mate (whether that may be opposite or same gender, or beast) according to the programming of our DNA.
We may find particular traits (like long hair, blue eyes, big breasts, etc.) because they are compatible with fertility. Therefore, we choose a mate, subconsciously, depending on soley whether we can produce children.

Evolutionarily speaking, it is because guys want to reproduce to pass on their genes to offspring and the only way to do that is to have a child (which is done though women).
Religiously speaking, its because God made them so :-)
