they want you to buy them? And what do you recommend...my computer died on me and I'm using a horrid old one now...I really need a good PC quickly, for college, and gaming would be nice too. But programs I need for school are really an issue. So, would it be expensive to buy a Vista computer right away, or do you think the prices will go down? How long do you think that would take? I want to spend $400-$700, do you think they will be more expensive than that? And of course, when will Vista PCs be available?

Jan 30 they start shipping on new pcs. Your best bet is to wait and find a Vista-equipped model that also has the software you need for college already on it.

Don't know how long it will be.

New PCs with Windows Vista will not be particularly expensive as compared to ones using Windows XP, however Windows Vista PCs have more strict requirements so the additional components to meet those requirements will increase the cost of the PC more than the OS upgrade.

The real concern with Windows Vista PCs will be the initial shakeout of bugs. Microsoft is notorious for releasing new OSes that need to be patched relatively soon after there release. Unless you are computer savvy you probably want to wait for the first patch to come out before you upgrade.

There are a wide range of PCs available for the price range you mentioned. You will definitely want to aim for the the higher end of the price range because at $400 you'll be cutting alot of corners to save a little money. Particularly if you are going to be gaming you will want to look at the $600-$700 range and spending more might be worth the investment. If your just looking for something for school then the $500-$600 range should be just fine.

If the vendor you buy from offers you an upgrade to Windows Vista for a reasonable price you should consider it. I personally would wait to install Vista because of the bug fixes I mentioned, but if you get it pre-installed you will get better support for it. Upgrading to Vista is certainly not a requirement.

Dell's Dimension line has a large range of choices for you in your price range and Dell is currently offering a free "express upgrade" to Windows Vista. This means they'll send you a CD with Windows Vista and you can install it yourself when your ready.

Finally one of the things people are looking forward to in Windows Vista is the new "stylish" interface called Aero and if you do not have good graphics card it won't even work. So if thats what your looking for make sure you get a PC that not only will work with Windows Vista, but will also be capable of running the Aero interface. The second link in my source list will tell you the requirements for the basic Vista interface and the Aero interface.

Hey my computer hardrive completely failed on me about three weeks ago. But the manufacturer sent me a new one so all was ok. But while I waited for the hardrive to come I installed Vista on my old one and it worked. My dad's company is affiliated with microsoft so I got it already. It is an awesome Operating system. I go to a university too so I needed it quick. Vista comes out on january 30th. SO what I would do in your case is just buy a computer now that is Vista compatible and includes a free upgrade to vista. Why? Because some things are not yet compatible with vista. At my university some websites and the network connections do not function well yet because they will not be upgraded to operate on vista until after it comes out on the 30th. I am still waiting for HP to create printer drivers for vista so I can print my homework, without using my friends computer. So get XP with a free upgrade and make sure the comp is compatible and then after it comes out what a little bit and then upgrade.

Ok in response to what everyone else is saying. I have had vista for a little while now and it works faster than XP for me. It will costa you more because it is a better system and the comp needs to be faster than your average comp. But you do not need some expensive amazing computer. I have a vista capable gateway tablet notebook. It has 1Gig of ram, a 1.7 GHZ Pentium M processor 2 mb L2 Cache. and a 128 Meg ATI X600 Mobility Radeon Graphix card. It works quickly and perfectly, and Im not running some low gfz version of vista, Im running the real deal Windows Vista Ultimate with all of the graphix options turned up all the way. It works great and works awesomely with video games like CSS Half Life 2: episode 1 etc. Vista comes with Direct X 10 so video games work awesomly. Before I got vista HL2: Episode 1 would not run but now it works perfectly. I think it was because I have a widescreen.

By the way you should check out Windows Office 2007 it is amazing and great for College work. So organized and simplified compared to XP versions. ALso One Note 2007 is perfect for storing all of your college stuff organized. The best thing ever created for college students in my opinion.

The link is TigerDirect and the computer is a Dual Core Pentium D for $700 + Shipping. It have XP Pro and comes with a Vista Express Upgrade. So, the upgrades cost about $100 if you buy just the software. We can assume from this. The new computers will be about the same as they are now, just come with Vista.
I just show the link for information and do not say go and buy this computer. Shop around and find a good deal.

well if you are in the USA, basically try to get a computer that is dual core, 64 bit, and vista ready. What you do is you will have to shop around now. Option - Read the Sunday paper if you have computer stores, they sometimes offer good deals. CATCH if you have the $800 to buy the initial computer then you will get the odd $300 back on rebates. Option - try Ebay and shop around there too, You can get some good deals. Option - If you can get a bare deal computer setup, with 550 w power supply, dual core motherboard w/64 bit, with capacity for 2 GB memory with AGP slots. If any computer has ALL PCI slots , run, do not buy. PCI video cards go like 50 mph. AGP can max out at 180 mph. Trust me on this.

Go to pcworld.com and read up on the articles so you will be familiar with what to buy.

TIP - if you buy a disk drive get the Sony DRU-830a, 18x with RAM off the internet. Use pricegrabber on the pcworld site and I think it was $43 for mine, and cheaper than the store.

You might be at the upper end of that budget but you can get a good Vista PC for around that. Make sure it has 2 gigs or more of ram, Dual core processor,100 gig or more harddrive. WIth Vista Home Premium and Ultimate you get Windows Media Center. Home basic isn't worth your money so don't get one with that. Anything that has the speks to run vista will be exceptional for gaming. Vista will have increased spead and relability for day to day tasks like homework. More info on vista at http://windowsvista.com and http://www.winsupersite.com/vista/

Vista Pcs will be available Januarry 30th, 2007

OK. I believe if you buy a new computer that comes with vista, it probably wont be too much more. If you r just going to buy vista, then it would be wise to wait until the first service pack comes out, that way it will be cheaper, and the bugs will be gone. I would guess it would take 6 to 10 months for this to happen.

All I know is that Windows Vista is going to be VERY EXPENSIVE when it first comes out. I know this because I really wanted Halo 2 to be on PC. But the only thing that's holding me back on getting that is the fact that I have to get Windows Vista first.... and that thing is freakin' expensive. So....... wait a while before getting it if you still want it.

Here's a website that may help you answer your questions:

If that doesn't help, try searching some more on Google.
