A friend of mine said a chiropractor helped him get over asthma. He said that chiropractors can do a lot for health problems. Can they help with digestive problems?

Yes... maybe. Chiropractic works because your body is a self-regulating and self-maintaining organism. It regulates and maintains itself through the action of the nervous system. The nervous system directs the activity of EVERY CELL in your body. That may be hard to believe, but it is true. Muscle cells, skin cells, liver cells, lung cells, large and small intestinal cells. The nervous system even direct the activity of white blood cells. (most immunologists now refer to the neuroimmune system, not just the immune system) When there is interference with the action of the nervous system the effects can be of any type. It is not a matter of opinion, but a matter of fact, that long standing nerve interference can cause disease. No doubt about it.

The reason chiropractic is a valuable tool for maintaining the health and function of the nervous system is because of the close relationship of the nervous system to the joints of the spine. When a chiropractor gives an adjustment to the spine, he does more than just relieve pain and stiffness. He restores movement. Movement inhibits aberrant incoming messages to the central nervous system (a phenomenon known as gait theory) and restores normal, segmental nervous system function.

Look at an anatomy chart of the spine and the peripheral nervous system, and you will see that there is hardly a region of the body than cannot be affected by this process. Chiropractic obviously cannot heal every disease. The right foods, exercise, good emotional health and a few other thing are necessary to obtain healing, but you cannot name a condition that isn't positively affected by chiropractic.

Possibly. I have a great chiropractor and it really is about aligning the spine and keeping the spinal disks healthy. Your spine sends messages to body parts and if your spine has a pinched nerve that connects to your digestive system it can cause problems. I exercise and if I don't get adjusted (Chiropractor term for fixing my spine) I am not able to lift weights as well.

What I'm basically saying is it depends on you if you're spine has a pinch or scoliosis in it, it could be the problem or it could be something your eating, colon build up etc...

If you tried everything else go for it as long as it's in your budget.

There are several possibilities for what could be going on such as something like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (an example only because of the digestive symptoms). I would recommend letting another adult family member (if there are any other relatives in the area) know what is going on. They might be able to help you out some more in trying to figure out what the next steps are. I would also recommend talking to the school nurse next week (if you are on Spring Break right now).

The thing with asthma is that it's tied together with the whole nervous system. Asthma is essentially your trachea closing up, and your trachea is made of cartilage, which is attached to the spinal cord bones in your neck. So perhaps this chiropractor was able to adjust the spinal column in your friend's neck so that his trachea wouldn't close up in response to the environmental factors that trigger it.

I don't think your lower spine has much to do with your digestive system in the way that asthma has a close relationship with the bones in your neck. I suppose it doesn't hurt to have a consultation with the chiropractor b/c i may be wrong, but my guess is that it's not going to do much good.

Quite possibly.
If the nerves which exit the spinal column and go to the stomach are being squeezed/pinched, an adjustment (or few) may align the vertebrae so there is no pressure on those nerves. Drop in to a chiropractor's office and tell the front desk you heard chiropractic was good and would they explain how and why it works. Then you can decide if you want to try it.

No, Chiropractors deal only with joint conditions and most commonly neck and back pain. They do not practice medicine and cannot write prescriptions or treat medical conditions. Their malpractice insurance doesn't cover it. Maybe he was trying to give advice but frankly, he could get in a lot of trouble for that.

chiropractors can do NOTHING about ANYTHING except for spinal problems. tell your friend her "chiropractor" is full of crap and should find a different one. dont get me wrong, i dont hate all og them. if it wasnt for mine i wouldnt be able to walk right now. but i had a muscular/spinal injury. there's nothing about adjusting your bones or masages that will cure asthma or heartburn! they are in no way connected!

not sure but this might help......DIGESTION PROBLEMS:

Take 1 tsp. vinegar after a meal to assist in digestion.

With your meal, drink a glass of water to which 1 tsp. vinegar has been mixed. Sip it slowly throughout your entire meal for good digestion.

Eat a banana.

Eat a slice or two of papaya after a meal, or take 2 papaya tablets for digestion. Papaya tablets can be purchased inexpensively at any herb store or WalMart.

Have a dish of pineapple for dessert as it will help with your digestion.
