Most people, I think, like the idea of government non-interference of self-regarding conduct. the problem is we will differ as to what we consider to be self-regarding. I might say that gay marriage concerns only the two people who are a part of a certain marriage. Others may say that gay marriage undermines the moral fabric of our society and leads to licentiousness, yadayadayada. You know what I mean.
Same with suicide, most people would say that if suicide only concerned the person who kills himself, what the hell. But it could affect his family and, even on a more generaly scale, society at large. Again, committing suicide may undermine the social order or our culture by exhibiting the fact that our value for life has diminished....... We are inevitably going to diagree as to which conduct is self-regarding and which is not. we need a coherent way to distinguish it. Is Masturbating in public self-regarding or not, e.g.? some say yes, it doesn't hurt anyone. Others would vehenemently disagree. Who's right?

When a person is truly suicidal, they don't need a second chance. They plan and organize and research. They do it right the first time they try, and charges can't be filed against a corpse. Those who talk about suicide, or make an attempt and fail or really not suicidal. They are crying for help. I have never known an attempted suicide victim to land in jail. Usually they are taken in protective custody and transferred to a facility where they receive help. Seathbelts do save lives and if a person is to stupid to use it they should be made to do so.

Because if someone is not wearing a seatbelt they can be thrown around in a car and injure someone else in the car, so it is not just affecting them. Also with suicide the person needs help. A lot of times when someone commits suicide they end up taking someone else with them.

well seatbelts effect other people because in an accident you get worse injuries and have high medical bills which generally comes out of taxpayers pockets. Other than that I have no opinion

People have to be protected from themselves.
Its as simple as that.
Its part of caring for people.
Yes, I think some people should be allowed to kill themselves. People with terminal cancer causing god-awful pain for example. But what about the 17 year old who just broke up with the love of his life?
You get the point that I'm getting at I assume.

To every action there is a reaction - just cause you don't think so doesn't make it less true.
