Good question. I think they have forward-facing knees so they can bend it backwards.

What is it with penguins and knees? This question gets asked every day.

Penguins are birds, They have the same leg structure, the same bones, the same bends as every other bird from ostriches to sparrows. Their legs are short and powerful but they have knees as much as a chicken has.

yes they do have knees
Penguins appear to have very short legs and no knees because only the lower leg is visible. Their knees and upper legs are feather covered, hiding them from view. This also means that penguins never ever get cold knees.lol,I love that,they never get cold,not like my bottom does.

They do, there's actually a book called "Why do Penguins have Knees?" which also has other medical oddities.
