I don't know if they throw them away. Some people donate their embryos so others that cannot use their own eggs can have children. If they are going to be discarded they should be used for stem cell research so they are not just wasted. I know 2 people that have had stem cell transplants due to leukemia...one lived and the other didn't, but with more research it could save many more lives...especially in children with this dreaded disease.
