Japan rocks, no doubt about it. I've lived here for 18 years and have no intention to go back to the States.

But, to get a job in Japan, you really need the language. Without that, your options, honestly, are very limited. There are a couple of hospitals in Tokyo that cater exclusively to the foreign community, so you may be able to snag something there while you bone up on your Japanese, but I have no references for you now - I'm in airport and killing time at the moment.

The hospital that comes to mind right now is in the Toranomon area of Tokyo. Tokyo/Yokohama is your best bet to get a job in your field. Of course, if your girlfriend wants to go to somewhere like Niigata, well, I can't help.

Living almost anywhere is better than the US with perhaps the exception of housing. Japan is a lot more fun, wages are probably HIGHER, but hours and commutes will be long and things are expensive (thus the higher wages).

I think everyone should try to live in at least one foreign country for a few years of their life. In my case I left the USA 15 years ago and have lived in a lot of places including Germany, Russia, Nigeria, and currently Philippines. Since I've been away I opened my eyes to the fact that all of these places (and probably many others) are nicer for me to live in than the US, which I hope I never have to go back to.

To work in Japan, you need a work visa. To get a work visa you need to have a job offer waiting for you before you arrive. Most jobs require that you have a BA/ BS degree. Do you ? I'd suggest you two try to find work here in the US. It will be very hard to find work in Japan unless you can read / write / and speak Japanese well. Most Americans teach English.

I think you will find it very tough to get a nursing job in Japan unless you are fluent in the language. There is a sizable Philipine community here in the larger cities but they mostly work in service industries like music or catering, I believe.Hope it works out for you

The U.S. is better. Not that Japan is bad. But the US has a way higher waging system, and housindg is better here. But Japan might be fun to try out for a few months. But remember its crowded, has bad wages, and most of all its polluted more than New York.

For your case, I say USA. I have been in Japan 3.5 years, and I think that time was great. In the bigger picture, life in the USA will probably suit your job and life much better.

Simple enough.....if you think life is better somewhere else, then leave. Knock yourself out.
