Most people think of Waterloo when they think of Napoleon, but his legacy is far more reaching than that. He was the first modern military dictator. He was nearly sucessful in forcing the aristocracy out of political leadership. He destroyed the old social order. Napoleon was from the Middle Class, and he was able to rise above his social standing to become a great leader, something the aristocracy feared greatly. They wanted position to be determined by bloodline and name, while Napoleon thought it should be based on merit. He initiated a number of enduring reforms making several legal, administrative and educational improvements. The Napoleonic Code continues in most of Europe to this day. So, I would say that other events that occured during his lifetime made him famous, Waterloo just cemented it. And, by the way, he was not short. Napoleon was average height, 5'8"

Napoleon was not famous for his battle at Waterloo. The battle of Waterloo humiliated Napoleon. He was famous for how he was able to unite France and bring them into a new era of prosperity. Of course, all good leaders have to have their mistakes, and Napoleon's just happened to be Waterloo.

Napoleon will be forever linked with Waterloo because of the expression "meeting one's Waterloo", but I don't think he should be remembered for a battle that he lost.
Waterloo should be remembered as a famous victory for the Duke of Wellington (as it is in England) but, if there is one battle that Napoleon should be associated with, it should be Austerlitz - an incredible tactical triumph.

The humiliating loss at Waterloo also led to the saying "to meet one's Waterloo," which means to suffer a decisive defeat. Napoleon also sold us the Louisiana Purchase for $15 million, or $.03 per acre. Today it is worth 300 billion, or $500 per acre.He was first defeated by Britain in 1814.

'Impossible is the word in the dictionary of fools". Nepolean is famous for saying these words also. The battle of waterloo brought his fame down. He was famous for his bravery..courage and leadership. If the articles that I have read about him are true..even after he was jailed..his enemies still feared his bravery..so killed him by way of slow poisoning. He was an extraordinary man..who rose from ashes..to carve a name for himself in the history.
