I know for one thing the neck is a bit warped. I know a guy who would fix it for free if I took it down, but I think taking it out in the cold would make it worse so I want to fix it myself but I don't know how. Also, do strings get old and should I replace them all? It's a laminated acoustic guitar with steel strings.

I haven't played for years, so I'm not as well versed on this stuff as I would have been back in the day, but if memory serves:

Go ahead and take it to get the neck fixed...the problem isn't going to get any better without it. Go ahead and take it out in the cold. What you need to worry about is humidity changes...so if the air in your house is dry, or if you store it with Silica to eliminate humidity, it won't hurt too much.

As for changing strings...yes do it. Then after you get new ones, here are 2 tips--wash your hands before you play and wipe your strings with a towel after you play. These things will cut down on the dirt and oil from your fingers, which is what makes your strings sound "dull".

With an acoustic the following may be tougher, but it worked on electric to help stay in tune:

Tune the strings extra tight and it sit for a while--stretches them out.
Eddie Van Halen used to also boil his strings and then let them dry in the sunshine...he always claimed it helped.

Also, make sure the strings aren't binding or twisting at the nut. This causes tuning problems. You can put graphite powder in the nut slots to help keep this from happening.

I play guitar, but know much about fixing them and problems. But yes, if the neck is warped, thats a big problem. And yeah, you do have to change old strings out. I'd advise you to take it to the person who said they know how to fix it.

Yes, the strings do get old. What you describe sounds like it's time for a new set. They are a bit more expensive, but have you tried the flat-wound strings? Sure are easier on the fingers.

Like that Kid above me said, placing your finger too far away from the Fret Line will make an unnatural sound. What good guitarists try to do is place thier fingers as close as possible to the specific frets - Thats just the way it is. If thats NOT the problem, return the guitar, get a refund, or get another guitar - But test it first -.-

Get a new guitar...since its warped and cant keep in tune for very long. Strings do need to be replaced.
