Think about this example:

A 3 year old child cannot grasp college algebra, the economic, social, and political ramifciations of FDR's New Deal programs on the evolution of the United States prior to World War II, or the physical and chemical processes that occur when a sulphur-based match is dragged alongside a matchbook.

Every stage of development is defined by the parameters of what is known as compared to what can be known. Asking a child to write a doctoral thesis is an artificial but highly beneficial example of how we can be given tasks that we cannot peform at the level of our development.
