All these answers are dead wrong. They shouldn't post answers for questions in which they have no clue.
The #10 signifies the position. Just like 1 is for goalies, 10 is for the playmaker, the most important position in soccer. The maestro on the field. It's got nothing to do with trying to emulate past heroes you ignorants.
Romario, Ronaldo, Van Nilsteroy, Van Basten, Cannavaro, Beckham, Klinsmann all these guys were stars at one point or another in their careers and they didn't wear #10. It just happens that a lot of really gifted players were playmakers and not say.. strikers.
And to the guy below me. Sasan. Have you ever played soccer in your life? Have you played or seen a team that has no true playmaker? So are you saying that teams can attack with long balls from your defenders directly to the strikers? Can you win many games like that?

I`m answering two questions here so pay attention. it`s not that soccer stars were 10 its that the attacking midfielder position is and has always been number 10 so therefore being that it also is the most difficult position to play u find yourself discovering that the biggesdt stars in soccer are attacking midfielders therfore u will alwas see them with number 10 in there back. example . schiaffino, pele , platini, zico. maradona, ronaldhino, totti, and so on.

To the guy above me: The most important position in soccer is defender not playmaker. Without defence there is no reason to continue.
