the same when it comes to rattle and shake, i understand diesels all rattle but mine really sounds like an old clanking tractor, like a 1940 model, could it have another problem? the best part is the 35 MPG i love that, but some times I think its asking for new parts before it spits out the old ones, any idea about my little friend and its life span, just don't want it to die at such a young age, thanks

Your Mercedes 240D is a bit better than the 220D and a tad worse than the 300D models as being "noted" for slow acceleration response and noise's associated with vibrations! Air filter mounts, broken air-filter brackets,AC and Power steering mounting brackets, along with worn/collasped engine-mounts are common items that create "rattles and shakes"! The tune-up procedures require valve lash adj.,changes of fuel filters, change of air filter and a recommendation of a diesel fuel additive to rid the fuel system of impurities and fungi-bacteria. Fuel injectors need occasional flushes or changes if "spray-patterns"are bad and cannot be corrected. A reputable mercedes exp.tech can help you get rid of the "rattles/shakes and create better engine performance"!Good luck!

- You need to adjust the valves every 15K miles. This requires a special set of wrenches and a set of long feeler gauges. It makes a big difference.
- Fuel filters are critical to performance. I like to change them every third oil change.
- Injectors get sloppy after about 200K miles. If yours are that old, it's probably worth the cost to replace them.
- Check the start of injection timing. If it's off by more than 2 degrees, replace the timing chain.
- Inspect the motor and transmission mounts. Worth replacing if they look cracked or soft.
- I'm not sure if the '74 used an ALDA for barometric compensation. If so, you can find a procedure for cleaning and adjusting here:
http://www.dieselgiant.com/mercedesaldaboostsystemservi.htm
Finally, run some Lubromoly Diesel Purge thru the system to clean out your injection pump.
When it's all done, it'll still be slower than mud, and noisey, but it should idle a bit better.

numerous in actuality Rule #a million - do no longer inhale. it is not a cigarette or a joint. Rule #2 - gentle with a tournament, no longer a lighter..the butane differences the flavour Rule #3 - it will pass out...generally. it rather is large...if it in no way is going out, that's too gently packed Rule #4 - confident...you do get what you pay for. low-priced 2-3$ cigars are crappola. you ought to be paying 12-25$ each and each for good cigars. Cuban cigars are the tops....in case you will get them. Romeo & Julietta has an excellent flavour, Punch is sweet. *shop them in a tightly sealed contained on your vegetable crisper is you do not have a humidor. They stay extra energizing that way. delight in!

My 300sd had a broken bracket under the air filter. This will make a lot more noise than normal.
Replacement parts are availiable, no problem.
Remove the air cleaner, check the 3 bolts on the air cleaner, the rubber groumet on the bolts also break.

First I would check the engine mounts, very likely they are worn & the engine has started to settle. You are right though, they can hardly get out of thier own way! Great car though - change the diesel filters every other oil change (use rotella oil). You will be surpised how long it'll last. I have a few customers that have of 500,000 miles on them & they keep going!

Yeah, they do rattle and clank! But with a bit of TLC, half a million miles is entirely do-able and with a bit more, a million is not unheard of. Check your engine mounts, though. They do have a finite life and do tend to wear a bit faster than the ones in the gas engine models do. Worn out engine mounts will make it sound a lot worse than it is.

Try adding a guart of auto transmision fluid to the fuel. I am not kidding I have had a bunch of old Benz diesels and that quiied it down. Lucus makes a nice diesel conditioner too!

Adjust the rocker arms with a feeler guage. Run the injector cleaner thru the injectors. Several website show how to disconnect the fuel lines and run it thru the injectors. change fuel filters, add water remover to tank. That many year is bound to have moisture in the tank.
