i drive a 5 speed 95 dodge neon stick-shift. everything was cool with my car untill about an hour ago. my clutch feels really hard to shift! out of the blue it feels like i have to muscle-out every shift. however, a couple times it felt as smooth as ever. what is wrong with my car, and is it safe to drive when it sometimes takes me 15-20 seconds just to shift into 1st?

all of the pedals work just fine. its mostly the shifter itself that isnt giving as much "give".ill push the shifter up into first, and i push and it just wont go. it seems like i have to hit it at just the right angle to shift it.

i hate to say this but it sounds like your going to need a new clutch if the pedal got stiff all of a sudden than the trow out bearing is failing and if other gears are shiftable and first is hard and grinds than your clutch is gone for your car my sister got her 96 neon done for about 400 the clutch itself is going to run between 75-200 dollars and is going to take at least half of a day to replace front wheel drive cars like your neon are more hard to work on due to the tight spaces and more steps that need to be taken to get at the clutch itself you have to drop the engine and transmission disconnect the two to see the clutch and replace it you should take the car to a shop unless you know someone with the tools and know how on clutches be careful when you drive it dont drive more than you need to if its to work than take it easy on the gas cause that will prolong the worn parts life get it fixed as soon as possible tho cause the clutch can fail at anytime and the car will behave like its in neutral you wont be able to go anywhere and need to get a tow truck to get you home

dodge cars suck! the transmission always gives out on all dodge cars, vans and trucks get rid of it, it's not worth putting in a new transmission. but don't take my word on it, just ask any mechanic and decide for yourself.

your clutch?......or your transmission? ........hard to push the pedal down?...or hard to shift the transmission?........don't know the cure unless you can describe the symptoms..........sounds like clutch control mechanism.......whether it be cable control or hydraulic.......check that first............then check the clutch & throw out bearing.............. lastly check the transmission!
