The dreaded "green water" is caused by algae that is so small it gets through conventional filter elements.
You can treat it chemically, through the use of a UV Sterilizer, or a Diatom Filter.
Good luck.

Keep your aquarium away from sun and when it is day time turn off your aquarium light to save energy and it will decrease the chances of getting algae. Buying algae eaters is just a waste honestly, I've had algae eaters like the "janitor fish" and it still doesn't make the aquarium away from algaes.Buying those algae tablets will also decrease the chances of getting algaes.
But, make sure you change the water every 2 weeks to also keep it away. Also make sure you have a good filter for your aquarium.
I've owned an aquarium for over 15 years now and this rarely happens to me. I hope this helped you a lot of your understanding about maintaining your aquarium. You follow all of my instructions this will bring your aquarium to success and beauty.
GOOD LUCK!

Avoid the green algae by keeping the aquarium out of the sun. To get rid of it clean the tank well and get an algae eater which will keep everything cleaned up nicely. It looks like an eel with a sucktion cup and just loves munching algae. Good Luck! =)

Go to an aquarium, a place that sells (only) fish and supplies (not Wal Mart), and ask them which system you should use to get rid of your algae.
